League of Women Voters Promote Fair Debate

A free community discussion, “Debating Fairly: Civility, Disagreement, and Democracy,” will be held with Southern Oregon University professors speaking will be held on Nov. 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Douglas County library on Diamond Lake Boulevard in the Ford Community room.

The professors guiding the discussion will be Prakash Chenjeri who has been teaching at SOU since 1995 and Daniel Morris, who has taught there since 1982. Chenjeri is an associate professor of philosophy and director of the Honors Program at SOU. Morris is professor of French and director of the Arts and Humanities Council at SOU.

The discussion focus will be healthy debate and disagreement in a democracy, the decline of civility in contemporary culture and how Americans can promote a greater respect for one another. After a brief power point presentation, participants are encouraged to actively participate in the discussion.

“Our community members can benefit by thinking with an open mind, and challenging their own assumptions about differences.  It may even give some new skills on engaging in political discussions, or any discussions where there are differing viewpoints,” says Sally Mckain of Oregon Humanities.

According to Mckain there will be light refreshments and coffee.  There will also be a resource list handout and a request for feedback form for participants to fill out.

The program, sponsored by Oregon Humanities will be hosted by the League of Women Voters for the Umpqua Valley with the American Association of University Women.
